Why MMO Reconnect exists

The people you adventured with are still out there. This is how you find them again.

The friends a game leaves behind

Guilds scatter. Servers merge or even close. The people you crawled dungeons and raided with for years, some who may know you (or at least your character), better than some of your coworkers, become distant memories. The spelling of their names becomes fuzzy, except for that one guy, because you had to type it so many times to get that particular buff they had. Eventually, the game moved on, and there was never a good way to find each other again.

Claim who you were

MMO Reconnect is built on a simple idea: you claim the characters you played, and old friends find you through them.

“I was Faelor, a ranger on The Nameless, from 1999 to 2001.”

Someone searches that name, that server, or that guild, spots you, and a reconnection starts.

MMO Reconnect works on the honor system. Many of us left these worlds decades ago. In many cases there is no account to log into for worlds that were shut down. For the games that are still running, many which look very different than they did years ago, they have had systems fail, be rebuilt, and in some cases purchased by some investment firm that doesn't want to invest in a more robust account system.

In many cases we have no way to prove who we say we are.

So how do we address this? Claims here on MMO Reconnect are self-asserted: you tell us who you were, and we help the right people find you. It is not perfect, but neither is memory, and that has never stopped a reunion.

This started in 2018

MMO Reconnect first went up in 2018 as a simple signup page. The idea was to ride the nostalgia wave when WoW Classic brought millions of lapsed players back into Azeroth in the year 2019. To help reunite those quietly wondering whatever happened to their old guild.

The wave came. The site was not ready. Life happened. The project went quiet.

This is the second attempt. One thing changed that makes it far more workable: Discord.

Its platform, its backbone, its community and API features did not exist in 2018 as they do today. Discord handles sign-in, chat, and the reunions themselves. It also prevents MMO Reconnect from needing to store additional data that we, honestly, don't want to have or be responsible for.

MMO Reconnect can stay small and focus on the one thing it does. It is not a company with a marketing budget. It is a small project made by someone who played these games too, run under Append Only LLC. (Bonus points if you understand the reference!)

A user-driven effort

This whole thing only works if the people it is for spread the word. The more of your old guild and clan mates who “claim in”, the more likely the person you are looking for is already here waiting to be found.

If MMO Reconnect is useful to you, the best thing you can do is share it with the people you used to play with that you're still in touch with.

Privacy comes first

You choose who can see each claim: Public, Findable (the default, so old guildmates can find you without your whole history being on display), or Private.

We collect digital identities, not real-world ones. No real names, no locations. There are no ads and no trackers, just one cookie to keep you signed in. See our Privacy & Copyright page for exactly what we store and why.
